Playing with Your Cat

All cats have certain basic needs like food, water and shelter, but alone these things are not enough; for mental and physical health and happiness, cats also need stimulation, and an interesting and challenging environment. It is for this reason that you must play with your cat, especially if your cat is an indoor cat, since indoor cats may not otherwise be getting all the exercise that they need.

Playing with your cat also helps grow and reinforce the bond between pet and pet owner. It will help you better understand your cat's personality and behavior, and it will help your cat to grow closer to you.

When playing with your cat it is important to remember that cats are natural and instinctive hunters. You should therefore aim to choose play activities which are analogous to hunting; allow your cat to stalk and hunt and pounce, play games that stimulate your cat's natural instinct to hunt birds or mice.

There are many cat toys available on the market which are sure to find useful for such activities. It's a good idea to buy a selection, and experiment, as you can't be sure which toys your cat likes until you try them out.
