Naming Your Cat

It's easy, and surprisingly common, to assume that choosing a name for your cat is simple - so simple in fact that you don't need to think about it. The reality is that while choosing a name for a cat isn't likely to be biggest mental challenge that you face in your life, it is important, and therefore it merits putting some thought into the process. This is especially true because once you've chosen a name, and you, your family and your cat start to get used to it, it becomes difficult if not impossible to change the name.

Some common ideas for choosing a cat names include:
  • Names which describe a physical attribute of the cat are always popular: "Snowball" for a white cat, "Fluffy" and so on. Of course, these types of names are very popular - and so people love them - both others do consider them clichéed.

  • Naming your cat after a previous cat that you have owned. Additionally, you can add a number to the name if you want to distinguish it, for example "Simpkin", then "Simpkin 2", "Simpkin 3", etc.

  • Naming your cat after a much loved friend or relative. For example, if you admire your Uncle Boris, why not call your cat "Boris". Or, if you want to avoid any possibility of confusion, you can call the cat, "Little Boris" or "Uncle Boris". If you decide to go this route do bear in mind that not everybody may realize that your choice of cat's name is intended as a complement - so therefore check with the person being "honored" that they're okay with it.

  • Naming your cat (or lion, or tiger, or other big cat) after a famous cat from fiction, for example:
Of course, you don't need to limit yourself to cat name's from your fiction: there's nothing to stop you calling your cat a name like:
    • "Captain Kirk"
    • "David Copperfield"
    • "Jim Hawkins"
    • "Oliver Twist"
    • "Tom Sawyer"

  • Naming your cat after a favorite author such as "Bronte", "Dickens", "Hemmingway", "Kipling", or "Shakespeare", or a famous historical figure such "Caesar", "Churchill", "Patton", "Roosevelt" or "Sherman". Remember that you can use the last name, or the first name.
